ART AND CRAFT

Our art and craft department has become the hub of our school. In this colourful classroom, our children learn self confidence while they strive for perfection. They learn to seek the best in themselves and others, to be patient and humble, to compete with themselves and to give constructive criticism. The students learn to draw, paint and work in a variety of mediums, while always keeping Krishna at the center of their art work. For the pleasure of the devotees and the Deities they display their work at different Temple festival occasions. Senior students may enter for the Cambridge Art and Design exams at the end of Grade 10.

MUSIC

At SMIS we draw on the expertise of traditional classical musicians who come to the school from the surrounding towns and villages to teach our children instruments such as mrdunga, tabla, harmonium and flute. All students study at least one musical instrument and learn to lead kirtan and bhajans.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Living at SMIS means a healthy life:- rising early, keeping clean, getting lots of fresh air and exercise, enjoying fresh vegetarian food and pure cow’s milk from the community goshalla. All drinking water comes from our reverse osmosis water-purifying plant.

In Mayapur, we have a dispensary for medicines and two doctors (Allopathic+Homeopathic) who take care of minor ailments. For more serious ailments the children are taken to specialists in Calcutta or Krishnagar.

Every year we have a “Health and Safety” week in the first week of the new school year. Children are taught water safety, fire safety and general accident safety. They are also given the training needed to assert themselves in the event of finding themselves in an abusive or dangerous situation.

LEARNING RESOURCE CENTERS

We have a large well equipped library with audio visual equipment and a computer laboratory where children learn basic computer proficiency skills. Children are encouraged to develop sound study habits and have an ongoing access to the library.
